The hotel was luxurious, in a decaying way.

Outside, the massive pool was overflowing and brown. A couple uprooted palm trees had fallen into it, making for a haunted decoration. The spinning doors were deactivated and covered in wooden boards in an attempt to stop the water and debris from breaking the glass, with only a small side door left uncovered to allow access into the hotel. Inside, most of the furniture was pushed against the walls. Muddy footsteps covered the marble floor—a janitor was mopping them away, and Margaret felt a pang of guilt as she walked into the lobby. She gave the man a polite, awkward smile and mouthed a small, ‘Sorry.’ The man nodded, easing some of her guilt.

“Can anyone help?” Henry asked the people in the lobby. It had been so long since Margaret had heard him speak English that she was slightly shocked to hear the words come out of his mouth seamlessly. He passed for an American.

The janitor saw Hannah in Henry’s arms, her injured leg and Henry’s bloodstained shirt, and dropped his mop. He shouted for someone in a language Margaret didn’t know, and a member of the staff rushed from behind the check-in desk towards them.

“There is an infirmary at the back,” the man said, and then accompanied Henry and Hannah to the right place down the hall. “Just one person, please,” he said when Margaret and Jessica tried to follow after them.

“She’ll be fine,” Katherine said, watching Henry carry Hannah towards the infirmary despite her protests that she could walk on her own. “We should get some new clothes meanwhile.”

Margaret looked down—water was pooling at her feet. Her soaked clothes clung uncomfortably to her body, and she was freezing. She hugged herself to stifle some of her shivering, but that didn’t stop goosebumps from forming all over her skin. Jessica stepped closer to her, also shivering and seeking out some warmth.

“But we don’t have any money,” Jessica said through clattering teeth.

Katherine untied a leather pouch from her belt. Though it was soaked in saltwater, its contents remained safe, and she opened it to reveal a stack of American dollars inside.

“The treasury always keeps different currencies from the Other World in case of emergencies,” she explained, and then gave Jessica some of the money. “Be careful not to spend it all. Great Lords know how long we’ll be stuck here.”

As if to emphasize her words, thunder cracked outside. They couldn’t see the lightning through the boarded-up windows, but the sound was like a giant’s roar, rumbling across the sky.

Katherine approached the desk with the intention to book a room for the day while the rest of them walked towards the stores. There was not much to choose from. Any other time the various shops and outlets might have been brimming with items for sale, but currently most of them were closed, and those that remained open had limited stock, showcasing bare mannequins and empty shelves. Though there was not much to see, Rolf watched everything around him with mild curiosity.
